Why SmartDPP Joined CIRPASS-2’s Community of Practice (and Why It Matters)

The path toward a fully interoperable Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a shared one—and SmartDPP has just taken an important step by joining the Community of Practice (CoP) within the European Union's CIRPASS-2 project.

We joined because collaboration is critical. Because designing a digital infrastructure that works across industries—and continents—requires the input of every stakeholder, especially those working at the intersection of technology, regulation, and sustainability.

And, perhaps most importantly, because the future of digital transparency in fashion depends on it.

First, what is CIRPASS-2?

Think of CIRPASS-2 as Europe’s blueprint for digitising sustainability. It’s part of the EU’s Digital Europe Programme, and its goal is ambitious: to make product lifecycle data accessible, useful, and standardised across key sectors like textiles, electronics, tires, and construction.

In essence, it’s about building a future where the circular economy isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a system supported by real, reliable data.

Why SmartDPP is getting involved

Our focus has always been the fashion industry. We believe DPPs can empower brands to be transparent, customers to make informed choices, and regulators to ensure accountability. But to make that vision a reality, collaboration is essential — and that’s where CIRPASS-2’s Community of Practice comes in.

This group brings together innovators in DPP-as-a-Service platforms, enterprise software (like PIMs, ERPs, and PLMs), and data standards. It’s not about competition. It’s about making sure all these systems speak the same language — and making the passport as universal and interoperable as, well, a passport.

What SmartDPP brings to the table

Joining this group gives us a front-row seat — and a voice — in shaping how DPPs will be built and used, especially in textiles. But it’s not just about sitting at the table. It’s about doing the work. At SmartDPP, we’re focusing on driving interoperability by working with fellow tech providers to ensure DPP platforms can exchange data smoothly and securely, regardless of the systems brands or manufacturers use. The CIRPASS-2 project also opens up new opportunities for global collaboration, allowing us to align with international partners and regulators to build a scalable DPP model that goes beyond Europe’s borders. And we’re getting hands-on — putting digital product passports into action in real-world settings, testing guidelines, identifying challenges, and refining best practices as part of the Textile Industry Group.

But what about neutrality?

It’s important to be clear: SmartDPP’s participation in the CoP is about collaboration, not promotion. CIRPASS-2 is a neutral initiative, and this isn’t a commercial partnership. We’re contributing our insights and learning from others to advance the DPP system as a whole — for the benefit of the industry, the environment, and consumers.

What’s next?

SmartDPP’s role in the Community of Practice is just getting started, but it’s already reinforcing a simple belief: sustainability isn’t something we can build in isolation.

Creating a Digital Product Passport that actually works — across borders, platforms, and industries — is only possible if we build it together.

And that’s exactly what we intend to do.
